2004-08-10 Every two years or so I get a craving for one the milkshake-like fake dairy concoctions, then spend the next two hours trying to cough up a lung. It’s really unpleasant. I’ll admit to getting an egg mcmuffin when I’m desperate.

2004-02-23 Fries good. Otherwise, McDonald’s isn’t so much a restaurant as a phenomenon. There’s something perversely comforting about having the same damn restaurant available all around the world. It’s a bit like that saying that you’re never more than 8 feet away from a spider, except that McDonald’s is somewhat more appetizing. The previous comment might not apply to the mini-McDonald’ses that are found inside WalMart locations. The McD’s at Mazza Galleria used to sell the most preposterously tall soft-serve cones. Years of watching them has allowed me to make out like a bandit at self-serve frozen yogurt machines, at least in cafeterias where cones are fixed-price while cups are sold by weight. In Asia, the fries aren’t as good. While the beef used to be shipped from the US (now Australia, iirc) the potatoes used are local, and not necessarily Russett Burbank, but the machines don’t seem to have been recalibrated. In East Asia and Russia, good luck with the cheese. The Chinese don’t generally make cheese. Russian cheese tends to be somewhat sweet. -dave |
