Late, and I lament the fact that I don’t lament its closing.
1/18/2003:I was surprised to see this tired old German restaurant in Washingtonian’s 100 Very Best Restaurants of 2003. It used to be pretty decent, and as I lived about seven minutes away, I ate there with some frequency. Last winter I decided to go back with some old friends, for old times’ sake. What a mistake. The place just felt tired, and so did the cooking. I know there aren’t many German restaurants in the DC metro area, but that doesn’t justify adding Wurzburg House to the Top 100. Would the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences award the Best Actor Oscar to Adam Sandler if he were the only actor left alive after the big earthquake hit? Well, probably, but that’s beside the point. Unless Wurzburg Haus has done a 180, don’t eat there. Buy a bottle of sauerkraut from Safeway and call it a day.

As an aside...the German food is substantially better at Cafe Mozart downtown. Heck, it’s better at the quirky Cafe Tirol in Arlington. Fie on you, Washingtonian 100 Best list!

What ebeth said, except that I’d substitute Ben Affleck for her Adam Sandler. And I’d skip that part about the Safeway sauerkraut.
At long last, proof that the Germans have a sense of humor: their embassy hasn’t asked the State Department to shut ’em down yet.
BTW, ebeth makes _much_ better spaetzle.
mostly ok

Partially it is that I am rarely in the mood for heavy, meat-laden meals. And I really really detest sauerkraut. But the last time I went to Wurzburg Haus everything was tired, from the overdone kitchy costumes and harried waitstaff to the overdone meat and the pile of schnitzel just lying limply on my plate. It wasn’t what I was looking for.

I admit that Wurzburg Haus was much better in years-gone-by than it has been recently, but I still enjoy the occasional visit there. They [usually] have good beers on tap, and their food is german. Not the best german food you could get, I’m sure, but still quite edible, and the experience is a nice one. Not something I’d want to do a lot, but I do enjoy it when I do get there.
