Sometimes, you just want simple. And inexpensive. And friendly. Won’t win any fashion awards, but dammit- it’s comfort food.

The weekend brunch pain perdu is fantastic. The andouille sausage that is an optional side comes as a palm-sized monolith, all fried and greasy. Sometimes, you just require fried and greasy! Take a pass on the hot croissant with jam & butter- it’s been microwaved. Get a yummy biscuit instead.

The breakfast and weekend brunch menus do not completely intersect, so if you show up sat or sun looking for a large breakfast biscuit like ebeth described, you’ll be quite disappointed.

For dinner, I tend to stick with the creoles, but I’m also fond of the catfish poboy [remoulade sauce on the side], and the small cajun pizzas.

For dessert, the bread pudding, strawberry shortcake [lemon pound cake with whipped cream and strawberries], and beignets with fruit are all favorites. The key lime pie is not green, thank god, but the crusts tend to be a bit disappointing. The bill is still staggeringly cheap, and the service is friendly.

MMM Tasty fries. Very nice biscuits. I also enjoy the chicken Po’boy, plain of course.

Yes it is kind of a dump and the parking is “limited”, you may end up moving your car to let someone else out.

The wait staff can be inattentive at times but generally do a resonable job.

Truth is, it’s really not all the good. It’s a dive. But I like a few of the dishes, and they serve good cafe au lait and beignets, and ya can’t beat that. Not a good place for a group, as seating is limited.

On the other hand, breakfast and Sunday brunch are pretty tasty. Two poached eggs atop a slab of grits, covered in creole sauce. Or just a big fat biscuit stuffed with scrambled eggs, cheese, and andouille. Mmmmmm. A tip: arrive early if you don’t want to wait. Waiting for food is hard enough, but waiting for breakfast really sucks.

You need to know what to order here. The creoles and jambalayas and gumbos are excellent. The desserts are very good. The recommended beers are Turbo Dog if you like a dark beer, Abita Amber if you don’t. But do not order the rotisserie chicken or the tuna; they are overcooked to beyond dry.

Very friendly, though; open all day, happy to do carryout.

If you order a “large” portion, or the gumbo stew, be aware that you will get a lot of food. Do not be deceived by the low prices.
