A recent trip confirmed a few things: the food still rocks, the malaysian coffee is wonderful, and the fried jackfruit dessert is even better than the banana dessert.
I think.
I will have to do more testing soon.
Original review, 2004-07-23:
This is the new (or merely reborn?) Dupont neighborhood restaurant. I can say this fairly authoratatively- when whim guided my feet there last week I ran into several neighbors, one set right after the other, and so whiled the wait for a table having a comfortable coze with friendly faces.
The location, across from the bewilderingly awful and busy L——— P——, was most recently host to the late Wazuri, and so the charming roofdeck should be quite familiar. [If not, shame on you. You’re the reason I can no longer get awesome mojitos whenever I want.]
The bar is fairly sparse- I really wanted a refreshing cocktail, but had to make do with a rail drink, having dismissed the wine and beer options.
Service is charmingly absentminded at times, but I was kept entertained by my fellow diners.
The food rocked. Portions are large, and good for sharing. Actually, if you’re not famished, two appetizers and one entree (assuming one can come to agreement) is more than enough food for two people. One appetizer (I’ll join the chorus and recommend the Rojak, because, well, it’s really good) and two entrees results in half of an entree being boxed up.
The Nasi Goreng was tasty, but I seem to have imprinted on the Nasi Goreng Jawa at Satay Sarinah. My entree had chicken and noodles and lime with a nice spicy heat to it, and I loved it.
Still, don’t go if you’re in a hurry or feeling impatient. Think leisurely. Think happy. Think about dessert... !
